NEWBERG, Ore. - A pair of goals, one in each half, turned out to
be just enough for Whitman College to survive a last-minute goal by
the George Fox University Bruins as the Missionaries hung on for a
2-1 victory in a Northwest Conference men's soccer game Saturday
afternoon here at Morse Field.
The visiting Missionaries gto on the board at 16:02 in the first
half when Stephen Phillips, driving the middle toward the keeper's
box, sent a pass to the right side to Andy Huntington, who angled a
shot into the left corner of the net past George Fox keeper Jake
Maguire for his second score of the season. At 51:07 of the second
half, Mike Brown notched his first goal of the season and what
turned out to be the game-winner when Greg Phillips threaded a pass
through traffic to him and he nailed a shot from 10 yards out.
Scrambling to score, the Bruins finally broke through with 55
seconds to play when Matt Gurlides sent a long pass from the right
sideline to the mouth of the net, and Dylan Durrell reversed it
into the goal for his second score of the season. The Bruins were
unable to get off any more shots, however, as the Missionaries play
keep-away for the final minute.
The Bruins held an 18-15 edge in total shots and an 8-6
advantage in shots on goal. Maguire had four saves while Whitman
goalie Brett Axelrod stopped seven Bruin shots.
George Fox (6-5-2, NWC 2-5-1) hosts Whitworth College and
Whitman (3-4-2, NWC 2-4-2) goes to Willamette University Sunday,
both games at 2:30 p.m. following women's games at 12 noon.
