McMINNVILLE, Ore. - With his first goal of the season, and the
only one of the game, Greg Hoiland gave the George Fox University
Bruins a 1-0 upset of their Yamhill County rivals, the Linfield
College Wildcats, in a Northwest Conference men's soccer match
Sunday afternoon here at the Linfield soccer field.
George Fox ended Linfield's three-game win streak which had put
the Wildcats in the thick of the league race, improving to 2-4-1 in
the NWC and 6-4-2 overall. The Wildcats fell to 3-2-2 in the
conference and 6-3-2 overall.
Hoiland was in the right place at the right time, taking a cross
from the sideline from Dan Potter, turning and firing a shot into
the lower right corner of the net with 5:38 left in the game.
Linfield put an extra player forward in an attempt to storm the
goal in the final minutes, and the ploy almost succeeded in the
88th minute when Brice Lang, Spencer Winter, and Adam Jaffe all got
successive shots within 10 yards and 10 seconds of each other, but
to no avail. Linfield's last gasp came with a minute left when
Chris Paradis kicked a close shot over the goal.
In all, Linfield took 22 shots, 11 on goal, to seven and five
for George Fox. The Bruins and Wildcats rank 1-2 in the conference
in shot attempts. George Fox goalkeeper Jake Maguire made 11 saves
in posting his third shutout of the season, while Linfield keeper
Grant Williams had four saves.
George Fox next hosts Whitman College Saturday at 2:30 p.m.
Linfield plays at Pacific University Wednesday at 3:30 p.m.
