WALLA WALLA, Wash. - Ryan MacKenzie scored his second goal of
the season with just under a minute-and-a-half left in regulation,
rescuing the George Fox University Bruins from the brink of defeat
and into an eventual double-overtime 1-1 tie with the Whitman
College Missionaries in Northwest Conference men's soccer Sunday
afternoon here at the Whitman Soccer Complex.
The teams battled on even but scoreless terms through the first
77 minutes of play before the Missionaries finally broke through.
Andy Huntington sent a cross to the left side of the penalty box,
where Stephen Phillips gathered it in and shot to the near corner
of the net for a 1-0 at the 77:08 mark. Only 82 seconds from
defeat, the Bruins stunned the Missionaries when Kyle Story fed
MacKenzie on the left side, and he drilled in the tying goal from
10 yards out to send the game to overtime.
Whitman out-shot George Fox 7-3 in the two overtimes, but both
teams' goalkeepers were up to the task. Kyle Putman had seven saves
in the game for the Bruins, while Brett Axelrod saved three for the
Missionaries. The home team held a 21-14 edge in overall shot and
9-4 in shots on goal, as well as a 4-0 advantage in corner kicks.
