NEWBERG, Ore. - Danny Williams scored late in the first half to
break open a scoreless game and Jeremy Hinton added an insurance
goal in the second half, lifting the Pacific University Boxers to a
2-0 win over the George Fox University Bruins in a Northwest
Conference men's soccer match Saturday afternoon here at Morse
Field.
After battling for over 41 scoreless minutes, the Boxers caught
a break as the Bruins tried to clear a ball from the goal area
after a Pacific throw-in. Jasem Jaihouni intercepted the ball and
tapped it to Williams near the left corner of the penalty box, and
Williams sent his eighth goal of the season into the center of the
net past lunging keeper Kyle Putnam at the 41:37 mark.
The Boxers added another goal at the 63:43 mark of the second
half when Hinton picked up his first goal of the year. A foul on
the Bruins resulted in a free kick for the Boxers just outside the
center of the box, and Hinton bent the ball around the right end of
the Bruins' wall and into the upper right corner of the goal.
The game was evenly contested, Pacific holding only a 13-10 edge
in shots and 5-3 in shots on goal. George Fox had more corner
kicks, 6-4. Andrew Stevermer had three saves for the Boxers in 86
minutes, with Chris Caswell finishing off the shutout. Putnam made
three saves for the Bruins
