HAYWARD, Calif. - A pair of California State University-East Bay
goals in the first 19 minutes of the game offset a George Fox
University goal in between as the home-standing Pioneers edged the
visiting Bruins 2-1 in a non-conference men's soccer match Saturday
afternoon here at Pioneer Field.
The Pioneers struck quickly as Mohammed Airuwayshid scored on a
pass from Ante Jozinovic a mere 2:01 into the contest. The Bruins
retaliated just 80 seconds later when Keith Marshall scored his
first goal of the season with an assist from Kyle Story.
Airuwayshid notched his second goal of the game unassisted at
the 18:11 mark, and that 2-1 score stood the rest of the way as the
teams took turns stopping further attempts. Kristopher Hall had
five saves for the Pioneers, while Bruin keepers Jake Maguire and
Kyle Putnam, each playing a half, turned back five, four by Putnam
in the second half.
The Bruins out-shot the Pioneers 14-13, though the home team had
more shots on goal, 9-7. George Fox also had more corner kicks,
6-4.
George Fox (2-3) now starts Northwest Conference play, hosting
Willamette University Wednesday afternoon at 4:00 p.m. Cal
State-East Bay (1-1-1) entertains Holy Names University Tuesday at
4:00 p.m.
