NEWBERG, Ore. – Jason Shon scored a pair of goals
in the first 12 minutes of the game, sparking the visiting Whitman
College Missionaries to an eventual 3-1 win over the George Fox
University Bruins in a Northwest Conference men's soccer
match Saturday afternoon here at Morse Field.
The Missionaries came out firing in the first half, taking eight
shots in the game's first 15 minutes to one for the
Bruins. Shon put Whitman on the board two
minutes into the contest when he collected the rebound of a shot
from the right side of the keeper's box by Stephen Phillips
that was deflected by Bruin keeper Jake Maguire and redirected it
into the center of the net. It was Shon's
second goal of the season.
Shon notched his second goal of the game and third of the season
on a skillfully-executed corner kick by the Missionaries at the
11:42 mark. Mike Mckenzie sent the ball from the
left corner past the far post, where Jasper Lipton headed it back
into the middle for Shon, who put the ball just under the crossbar
for a 2-0 lead.
Whitman added a third goal in the second half at 71:48 when
Stephen Phillips was fouled inside the penalty box and converted
the penalty kick with a shot to the center of the net, his fourth
goal of the season, as Maguire anticipated a shot to his
left. That score offset the Bruins' only
goal at 76:41 when Garrett Blizzard sent a long ball from midfield
following a Whitman foul to the right side of the penalty box,
where Brennan Altringer gathered in the pass and put it inside the
far post for his fourth goal.
Whitman finished with a 17-15 edge in total shots and 11-5 in
shots on goal. The Missionaries also held a 5-4
advantage in corner kicks, but were whistled for eight offsides to
none for the Bruins. Maguire tallied eights
saves in goal for George Fox, while Whitman keeper Tim Shu recorded
four saves.
With the win, the Missionaries moved into first place in the
conference at 4-1-1 (6-1-5 overall) after Whitworth University fell
to 4-2 in league play with a 3-1 setback at Pacific
University. George Fox (2-7-3, NWC 1-3-2) hosts
18th-ranked Whitworth while Whitman goes to Pacific Sunday, both
games at 2:30 p.m. NWC women's games will
precede the men's games.
