SALEM, Ore. -
Despite an 18-11 advantage in total shots and an 8-5 edge in shots
on goal, the George Fox University Bruins could not put anything in
the net while the Willamette University Bearcats knocked in a pair
for a 2-0 win in Northwest Conference men's soccer action Saturday
afternoon here at Sparks Field.
In the first half, the Bruins more than doubled the number of
shots the Bearcats took, 11-5, but the home team got the only score
of the period when Ivan Gutierrez put one into the upper right
corner from 17 yards out after a cross from Nick Forbes at the
25:03 mark. It was Gutierrez's second goal
of the season.
The Bearcats notched an important insurance goal in the second
half as Erik Kaufman finished off a two-on-one play with a slow
roller into the net for his sixth goal of the season, assisted by
Casey Dineen, at 52:41.
Mark Bennett made eight saves in goal to earn the shutout for the
Bearcats. Jake Maguire had three saves as the
Bruins' goalkeeper.
George Fox (2-11-3, NWC 1-7-2) will look to end a five-game losing
streak next Saturday, Nov. 1, at Linfield College, game time at
1:30 p.m. Willamette (3-10-1, NWC 2-7-1) hosts
Pacific Lutheran University next Saturday as well, also at 1:30
p.m. Both games will be preceded by NWC
women's games at 11:00 a.m.
