PACIFIC LUTHERAN 3, GEORGE FOX 0: Lutes Down Bruins Behind Trio of Rookie Goals

Box Score

TACOMA, Wash.
– A trio of freshmen provided the goals and the home team defense was solid throughout the match as the Pacific Lutheran University Lutes defeated the visiting George Fox University Bruins 3-0 in a Northwest Conference men's soccer match on a windy and rainy Saturday afternoon here at the PLU soccer field.

Ricky Morales scored his team-leading third goal of the season in the first half and Surafel Worku and Chad Kearns added second-half tallies to give the Lutes the win.  PLU goalkeeper Daniel Mangum did not need to make a save as the defense limited the Bruins to just four shots, none on goal.

Morales put the Lutes on the board at 13:32, taking a pass from Worku and dribbling across the box before firing one home from about 12 yards out. The Lutes picked up their second goal at 64:37 when the same duo, Worku and Morales, teamed up for a goal. Morales worked the ball down the right wing and crossed to Worku, who slammed the ball into the goal from about 10 yards out for his second tally of the season. Kearns capped the scoring at 80:06 with his first goal, cracking home a short volley on a crossing pass from Peter Thomas.

George Fox goalkeeper Jake Maguire had little chance on any of the three PLU goals, but was able to keep his team in the game with three saves as the Lutes peppered a total of 18 shots at goal. The Lutes owned an 8-3 advantage in corner kicks, all eight coming in the opening half.

Both teams have Northwest Conference home games Sunday at 2:30 p.m.  George Fox (1-6-3, NWC 0-2-2) hosts Linfield College and Pacific Lutheran (3-5-1, NWC 1-2-1) welcomes in Willamette University, each following NWC women's matches at 12:00 noon.
