NEWBERG, Ore. – Stymied for three straight games
without a goal, the George Fox University Bruins finally came alive
offensively Sunday afternoon here at Morse Field, scoring twice in
the first half and once in the second to hold off the Linfield
College Wildcats 3-1 in a Northwest Conference men's soccer
match.
George Fox midfielder Brian Story was the first-half story as he
scored his first two goals of the season to stake the Bruins to a
2-0 halftime lead. He notched his first goal
when Brennan Altinger sent a cross from the right baseline into the
penalty box which was deflected by Linfield keeper Joe Locascio,
and Story gathered it in near the left post and shot it back past
Locascio at the 26:54 mark. His second score
came five minutes later at 31:48 on a liner from 20 yards out that
snuck inside the left post after a short pass from Jon Gutierrez.
Linfield cut its deficit in half at 51:09 in the second period
when Michel Camacho made a long run to the left corner of the
keeper's box, slipped through the George Fox back line, and
nailed one off the far post that angled back into the
net. It was Camacho's first goal of the
season. The Bruins countered that at 66:23 when
Bret Hamilton crossed from the left baseline to the middle of the
box, where Brennan Altringer slid in to punch the ball home for the
final margin. It was the third goal of the
season for Altringer.
The game was closely contested as George Fox managed 16 shots,
eight on goal, to 13 ties and seven on goal for
Linfield. The Wildcats held a slight 2-1 edge in
corners. Jake Maguire made six saves in goal for
the Bruins to earn his first victory of the season, while Locascio,
who had four saves in the first half, took the loss for the
Wildcats. Jon Thompson worked the final half in
goal for the Wildcats and had one save.
