NEWBERG, Ore. -
Taking control of the pace of the game early with three corner
kicks and three shots in the first four minutes, the Pacific
Lutheran University Lutes eventually turned their numerous chances
into five goals en route to a 5-1 win over the George Fox
University Bruins in a Northwest Conference men's soccer
match Sunday afternoon here at Morse Field.
The Lutes went on to out-shoot the Bruins 17-2 in the first half,
but George Fox keeper Jake Maguire made five saves in the period
and it appeared as if the home team would manage to stifle the
visitors despite their myriad opportunities. It
was not to be, however, as PLU finally broke through at 40:41 when
Spencer Augustin's throw-in from the right side was batted
around in the middle of the penalty box for a moment, then was
corralled by Scott Parsons, who put it into the left side of the
net for his first goal of the season.
With the scoreless deadlock snapped, the Lutes added another goal
quickly when Chad Kearns scored his second goal of the year off a
short pass from the left by Peter Thomas at
41:53. A potential third score on a shot by
Augustin toward a wide-open goal was saved with a spectacular
header deflection out of bounds by the Bruins' Connor
Campbell at 43:36.
Augustin was not to be denied in the second period, though,
knocking in his third goal on a header into the far corner off a
cross from the left by Lance Davis at 49:16. The
Lutes made it 4-0 at 70:08 when Derek Karamatic lined one from the
right side of the penalty box to the far corner after a pass from
Ricky Morales.
The Bruins finally spoiled the Lutes' shutout bid at 70:53
when Keith Marshall took a cross from the left side by Garrett
Blizzard, turned, and fired a bullet from 15 yards out inside the
near post for his second goal of the season. The
Lutes countered it, however, when Karamatic collected his own shot
which had rebounded off the left post and sent it into the upper
far corner for his sixth goal at 73:54.
PLU ended with a 31-7 advantage in total shots, 12-3 in shots on
goal, and 10-1 in corner kicks. Daniel Mangum
had two saves in goal for the Lutes, while Maguire had five in 73
minutes for the Bruins before Danny Kamna played the final 17
minutes.
George Fox (2-13-3, NWC 1-9-2), with its home season concluded,
plays its final two games in eastern Washington next weekend in an
effort to snap a six-game losing streak, taking on Whitworth
University Friday at 1:30 p.m. and Whitman College Saturday at 2:30
p.m. The Whitman game has been moved back an
hour from its originally-scheduled time to allow some Whitman
players to finish their GRE exams. Pacific
Lutheran (8-8-2, NWC 6-5-2) next hosts Linfield College Friday at
1:30 p.m.
