Box Score
NEWBERG, Ore. – An explosive first half in which
both teams scored two goals turned into a defensive struggle the
rest of the way, ending after two overtimes in a 2-2 deadlock
between the George Fox University Bruins and the California State
University-East Bay Pioneers in a non-conference men's soccer
match Wednesday evening here at Morse Field.
The homestanding Bruins struck first at 3:30 in the opening period
as Garrett Blizzard sent a cross into the middle of the box, where
Kyle Story slid in to knock the ball past East Bay keeper
Kristopher Hall for his first goal of the
season. Blizzard, one of the Bruins' top
offensive threats, was returning to the lineup after missing the
last two games with a leg injury.
The Pioneers tied it at 9:14 when Chris Pereira got loose near the
left corner of the keeper's box and sent a shot to the left
of Bruin keeper Jake Maguire, his second score of the
season. The Bruins regained the lead at
13:12 when Jon Gutierrez put the ball into the
middle from the left corner and Keith Marshall headed it into the
upper right corner for his first goal of the
season. The Pioneers again knotted the game when
Jordan Ferrell drilled a long ball from beyond the midfield stripe
to Ante Jozinovic racing down the center, and he beat two Bruin
defenders to angle the ball into the right corner at 38:10 for his
second score of the fall.
Each team had three shots on goal in the first half, but could
manage only one shot with a chance to go in throughout the second
period as the defenses tightened. The first
10-minute overtime saw only one shot attempt, that by East Bay, and
it sailed high.
The second overtime brought plenty of drama but no
score. The Bruins' Story sent a free kick
from the right wing toward the far post three minutes in that was
deflected out of bounds by Hall diving to his right, and on the
ensuing corner kick, Story again had a good shot from 10 yards away
but drilled it just over the crossbar.
Not to be outdone, the Pioneers got two corner kick opportunities
in the middle of the period by Ben Hill and Jozinovic, but Maguire
stopped a line drive on the first one and made a spectacular diving
deflection to his right on the second. Jozinovic
got one final header attempt that was stopped by Maguire, this one
more routinely, as time wound down.
The Bruins finished with 15 shots, five on goal, to 22 and seven
for the Pioneers, who also held a 13-3 advantage on
corners. Maguire picked up five saves and Hall
three to keep the game tied.
George Fox (0-4-1) will next seek its first victory of the season
Tuesday at home against Walla Walla University at 4:00 p.m.
California State-East Bay (1-2-1) visits Concordia
University-Portland at 1:00 p.m. Thursday.
