NEWBERG, Ore. – Unable to resolve anything
after 110 minutes of play, the George Fox University Bruins and the
University of Puget Sound Loggers battled to a 1-1 draw in two
overtimes in the Northwest Conference men's soccer opener for
both teams Sunday afternoon here at Morse Field.
Puget Sound scored its goal 12 minutes into the contest when
Daniel Lee, driving the center lane, fed Alex Lehecka near the
right corner of the penalty box, who then drove around a Bruin
defender and sent the ball into the far corner of the
net. It was Lehecka's second goal of the
season.
After a competitive first half in which the Loggers got 11 shots
and the Bruins nine, George Fox took control in the second half,
out-shooting the visitors 11-4 in the period.
The attack finally paid off when Peter Luginbill, dribbling near
the front of the penalty box, kicked the ball off to Brennan
Altringer on his right, and Altringer sent a shot into the far
corner of the net at the 77:27 mark to knot the game at
1-1. It was Altringer's second score of
the season.
In the two overtimes, Puget Sound got off four shots and George
Fox three, but the defenses were up to the task of preserving the
tie. Bruin keeper Jake Maguire stopped 11 shots
on the day while Logger goalie Greg Saetrum had four
saves. The Bruins had more total shots (23-19),
but the Loggers had more shots on goal (12-6).
The Loggers had more corner kicks (9-8), with all the Bruins'
attempts in the second period.
George Fox (1-4-2, NWC 0-0-1) next visits Pacific University for a
Wednesday night contest at 7:00 p.m. Puget Sound (2-3-1, NWC
0-0-1) goes to Whitworth University Saturday for a 2:30 p.m.
