PUGET SOUND 2, GEORGE FOX 0: Win Eludes Bruins Despite Outshooting Loggers

Box Score

NEWBERG, Ore. - Despite out-shooting their opponent for only the second time all year, their first win of the season still eluded the George Fox University Bruins as the visiting University of Puget Sound Loggers snuck off with a 2-0 victory in a Northwest Conference men's soccer match Saturday afternoon here at the Austin Sports Complex.

George Fox held a 17-14 advantage in total shots in the game, although Puget Sound managed an 8-4 edge in shots on goal.  The aggressive Loggers also cost themselves some other scoring opportunities as they were whistled for 13 offsides violations to only one for the Bruins.

The Loggers' first goal was actually not scored by a UPS player as the Bruins made a defensive mistake that cost them an 'own goal'.  With just under four minutes left in the first half, the Loggers' Kyle Benson took a shot from the right side of the penalty box that was blocked in front of the goal.  As George Fox keeper Elliott Davis dove to his left after the loose ball, a Bruin defender tried to clear it, but the ball rolled backward and off Davis' hand into the right corner of the net.

The game remained tight until late in the second period, when the Loggers finally got a big insurance goal in the 79th minute.  Landon Gauthier received a pass on the right sideline, dribbled a few paces down the line, and crossed to the middle of the box, where Andrew White tapped it home from five yards out.  It was White's fourth score of the season.

Both teams substituted liberally in the final 10 minutes, contributing to a total of 33 players making appearances.  Puget Sound substituted eight players in the game, while George Fox had 13 substitutions in addition to its starters.

Davis made four saves and Kasey Haugan two in the final five-and-a-half minutes for the Bruins, while Chris McDonald made four saves in recording his eighth shutout of the season for the Loggers.

Puget Sound is now 9-4-5 overall and 6-3-3 in the conference.  George Fox is 0-13-2 overall and 0-11-1 in league play.  Counting their last three games of the 2009 season, the Bruins have gone 18 games in a row without a win, equaling a team record.
