Box Score NEWBERG, Ore. – In one of their better
defensive efforts of the season, the George Fox University Bruins
allowed Willamette University only three shots on goal - but two of
them went in, giving the Bearcats a 2-0 win over the visiting
Bruins in a Northwest Conference men's soccer match Saturday
afternoon here at Sparks Field.
After a scoreless first half in which George Fox got only three
shots in all and Willamette only two, the Bearcats finally broke
through at 65:21 on a 25-yard free kick from 10 yards inside the
left sideline by Brendan Dineen. The kick was sent on the
ground into the penalty area and went untouched into the far right
corner of the goal for Dineen's third goal of the season.
Willamette increased the lead to 2-0 at 73:55 on Derek Johnson's
first goal of the year. The scoring play started when Patrick
Yagi reversed the field with a lengthy cross from the right side to
Mike McGrew, who crossed from the left to Johnson in the middle of
field about four yards out, from where he redirected the ball into
the goal.
The Bearcats took 12 shots total, while the Bruins managed four
shots, two on goal. One was stopped by Eben Helleckson, who
got the shutout win, and the other was a team save. Elliott Davis had a save on
the only other Willamette shot on goal.
