Box Score WALLA WALLA, Wash. – Sam Freedman scored
his second goal of the season 12 minutes into the second half,
breaking a scoreless duel and lifting the Whitman College
Missionaries to a 1-0 win over the visiting George Fox University
Bruins in Northwest Conference men's soccer action Sunday
afternoon here at the Whitman Athletic Fields.
With the win, the Missionaries completed a season sweep of the
Bruins and evened their season record at 7-7-2 while going to 7-4
in the conference. George Fox slipped to 2-12-1 overall and
0-10-1 in the NWC.
The Missionaries totally controlled the opening half,
out-shooting the Bruins 10-0 but failing to capitalize on their
chances. Just before intermission, Whitman had headers by
Jack Morgan and Cooper Schumacher 40 seconds apart clang off the
post and the crossbar.
The Missionaries picked up the only goal of the game at the
57:24 mark of the second half when Riley Hernandez made a long run
to the top of the box and slid a short cross to Freedman, who
kicked the ball to the top of the goal for the game-winner.
The George Fox offense finally came alive in the second half as
the Bruins managed 11 shots to 14 for the Missionaries.
Pressing in an effort to secure the equalizing goal, the Bruins
even brought goalkeeper Elliott Davis out high to
take a free kick that he nearly put into the net, only to have
Whitman netminder Michael Bathurst make one of his three saves on
the effort. That triggered a Whitman fast break that nearly
resulted in an insurance goal, but Davis was able to get back and
make one of his five saves in the game.
Whitman finished with a 24-11 edge in shots, 6-3 in shots on
goal, and 7-3 in corner kicks.
