Box Score SALEM, Ore. - Erik Kaufman
scored two goals, one in each half, and Mike McGrew had both a goal
and an assist, lifting the Willamette University Bearcats to a 3-0
victory over the visiting George Fox University Bruins in a
Northwest Conference men's soccer match Sunday afternoon here at
Sparks Field.
Kaufman got the home team going at 20:07 with a chip shot over
Bruin goalkeeper Elliott Davis from 14 yards out
after receiving a pass that Kevin Martin sent from
Willamette's defensive half of the field. That goal,
his fourth of the year, stood up for the remainder of the first
half, an evenly-played 45 minutes in which the Bearcats took only
one more shot than the Bruins.
Kaufman's second goal of the game and fifth of the season
came just two minutes into the second half. Mike McGrew put
the ball into play near from the left sideline, his cross finding
Adan Vazquez about eight yards from the right post. Vazquez headed
the ball down and back across the goal, where Kaufman was open to
put the ball into the net from four yards out at 47:03.
McGrew completed the scoring with his fourth goal of the
season, blasting a 21-yard direct free kick into the goal at
53:18.
Willamette goalie Alfredo Zuniga made five saves and earned the
shutout. Davis made six saves in 75 minutes for George Fox,
with Jacob Baker playing the final 15 minutes.
The Bearcats outshot George Fox 14-8, with a 9-5 advantage in
shots on goal. Willamette also held a 6-3 edge in corner kicks.
Both teams went deep into their benches, as George Fox had 24
players who saw action while Willamette used 20 players.
