Box Score WALLA WALLA, Wash. – Leland
Matthaeus scored the first goal of the game and assisted on the
second, both in the second half, in leading the Whitman College
Missionaries past the visiting George Fox University Bruins 2-0 in
a Northwest Conference men's soccer match Saturday afternoon
here at the Whitman Athletic Field.
The Missionaries were in total control throughout the first
half, taking 19 shots to only two for the Bruins, but the visitors
played solid defense and turned away eight shots on goal, seven by
keeper Elliott Davis and one by the Bruin back
line.
Matthaeus broke the scoreless deadlock just over three minutes
into the second half when he gathered in the rebound of a shot off
the crossbar by teammate Joe Virden and followed it in for his
fifth goal of the season. In the 78th minute, he crossed to
the middle for Bill Landefeld, whose shot on the fly found the back
of the net for his first score of the campaign and a big insurance
goal for the Missionaries.
While Whitman had nine second-half shots, the Bruins doubled
their total with four shots, including one each on goal by Luke
Hammer, Luke Dickens, and Conor Ike. Matthaeus led Whitman
with seven shots, four on goal, while Junpei Tsuji had six
shots. The Missionaries held a 7-3 edge in corner kicks as
well.
Davis finished with eight total saves for the Bruins, while
Michael Bathurst made three saves in the net for the
Missionaries.
