Box Score NEWBERG, Ore. – Bringing their first
season under new head coach Luis Del Rio to a close, the visiting
George Fox University Bruins dropped a 2-0 decision to the Pacific
University Boxers, who got two first-half goals from Garrick
Knowles, in Northwest Conference men's soccer action here
Friday under the lights of Lincoln Park Stadium.
George Fox ends the season 2-16-1 overall and 2-12 in the
conference, finishing in eighth place. Pacific is done also
with a 5-14 overall slate and a 3-11 NWC mark, closing out the
season in seventh.
Knowles notched both of his goals, his first two of the season,
on almost-identical plays in the first half. At the 6:17
mark, he took a free kick from the right side of the keeper's
box following a George Fox foul and drilled it into the net past
Bruin rookie keeper Luis Angel Del Rio, giving the
home team an early lead.
That score stood until six seconds were left in the half.
Following yet another Bruin foul, Knowles placed the ball in the
same spot and hit the same kind of shot into the goal to give the
Boxers a 2-0 lead at the break, which they made stand up through
the final 45 minutes.
Pacific out-shot George Fox 20-12 in total shots and 12-4 in
shots on goal, with a 4-2 margin in corner kicks for good
measure. Mark Watson led the Boxers in shot opportunities
with seven, four on goal. Luke Dickens came off the bench to
take three shots, two on goal, to pace the Bruins.
Michael Summers made four saves in goal for the Boxers to
preserve the shutout. Del Rio had a career-high 10 saves in
keeping the Bruins close in the contest, seven in the second
half.
