GEORGE FOX 1, WILLAMETTE 0: Bruins Give Del Rio First Coaching Win over Bearcats

SALEM, Ore. – Myles Sorokovsky scored the only goal of the game in the 83rd minute to give George Fox University its first win of the season, a 1-0 victory over the Willamette University Bearcats, and new Bruin head coach Luis Del Rio his first college win in a Northwest Conference men's soccer match here Sunday afternoon at Sparks Field.

The home-standing Bearcats controlled most of the action in the contest, taking 17 total shots to seven for the Bruins, with a 9-2 advantage in shots on goal and a 10-2 margin in corner kick attempts.  Bruin keeper Elliott Davis was kept busy making nine saves in 86 minutes of work to earn the win, with Luis Angel Del Rio minding the net for the final four minutes to help secure his father's first win as the Bruins' coach.

The game appeared destined for overtime as the team's defenses were up to the challenge of keeping their opponents off the scoreboard for over 82 minutes.  With the Bearcats pushing forward late in the game, George Fox stole the ball and got it quickly into the midfield, where Gabe Louthan played it through to Sorokovsky.  The sophomore midfielder then beat a defender at the top of the penalty box and scored on a shot from 15 yards out to the right corner of the net for his second goal of the season at the 82:24 mark.

Sorokovsky and Andrew Vasilauskas each had three shots for the Bruins, while Yazan Hishmeh paced the Bearcats with four shots, three on goal.  Willamette keeper Brayden Calder posted one save. 

The win broke a nine-game losing streak for the Bruins, who had tied their season opener, and brought their record to 1-9-1 overall and 1-5 in the conference.  The Bearcats slipped to 4-6-1 overall and 1-4-1 in the NWC.
