Box Score NEWBERG, Ore. – Striking for a goal only
26 seconds into the game, the visiting Whitworth University Pirates
quickly established the tone of the game and sailed to a 6-0 win
over the George Fox University Bruins in a Northwest Conference
men's soccer match on a chilly, wind-swept Sunday afternoon
here at the Austin Sports Complex.
On the Pirates' first possession, Robby Ubben sent a
through ball from midfield to a streaking Rylan Berriman, who split
the Bruin defense and beat keeper Ricardo Sotelo for his second
goal of the season with 44:34 showing in the game clock. The
Pirates' second goal came at the 23:42 mark when the Bruins
were whistled for a foul just outside the box and Spencer Wolfe
hammered the direct free kick inside the left post from 20 yards
out for his second goal.
The Pirates add three more goals in rapid succession in the
first half. Matt Bray scored his first goal one-on-one
against Sotelo after a through ball from Colin Shockman at 30:55,
David Starkovich's corner kick at 36:58 resulted in Balin
Larson's second goal, and Karl Muelheims scored a one-on-one
goal, his third of the year, at 43:06 following a through ball from
Sam Engle.
Ahead 5-0, the Pirates added one final goal in the second half,
Will Wren heading home a corner kick from Wolfe at 48:54 for his
second goal of the season. The George Fox defense kept the
Pirates out of the net the rest of the way, but the damage was
done.
The offensive statistics were not as one-sided as might be
expected from the final score. Whitworth out-shot George Fox
24-14 overall, 13-3 in shots on goal, and 8-5 in corner kick
opportunities. Luke Dickens led the Bruins
with five shots, two on goal, while the Pirates spread their shots
among 13 different players, Berriman and Wolfe leading the way with
four shots each.
Sotelo finished with seven saves in the net for the
Bruins. Timmy Costa got the win in 58 minutes of work in goal
for the Pirates, making two saves, while Shane Nishioka-Healy
completed the shutout with one save.
