Box Score PARKLAND, Wash. – For the second time
this season, George Fox University took Pacific Lutheran University
to the wire in a Northwest Conference men's soccer match,
only to see a late goal by the Lutes once again turn a potential
upset into a frustrating 1-0 loss for the Bruins Sunday afternoon
here at East Field.
In their previous meeting in Newberg on Sept. 21, the Bruins and
Lutes went toe-to-toe before PLU scored with a mere 34 seconds
left. This time, the two battled to a scoreless draw for over
80 minutes before the Lutes finally punched across the winning
score in a tough, physical match that saw 40 fouls whistled (25 on
PLU, 15 on George Fox) and seven yellow cards (four on PLU, three
on the Bruins).
PLU got its game-winning goal following a George Fox foul in the
82nd minute. Diego Aceves sent a place kick into the middle
of the box, where Joe Olenginski secured the ball and knocked it
home from six yards out at the 81:56 mark.
The PLU defense held the Bruins to five shots in the game, only
one in the second half, and two on goal, with Luke
Andrew getting the most chances with two shots. The
Lutes fired 18 shots in all, eight on goal, led by Derek Johnson
with total eight shots and four on target. PLU held a 6-3
edge in corner kicks also.
George Fox keeper Ricardo Sotelo kept his team in the game with
seven saves, while Joe Rayburn made two saves in picking up the
shutout win for the Lutes.
