Box Score LA VERNE, Calif. – Back on the field only
15 hours after playing a night game at California Lutheran
University on Saturday, the road-weary George Fox University Bruins
dropped a 4-0 decision to the University of La Verne Leopards in a
non-conference men's soccer match Sunday afternoon here at
Ortmayer Stadium.
The Leopards scored their first goal in the 15th minute when
Saul Uribe collected a loose ball following a cross from the right
and sent it just inside the left post from 15 yards out.
Their second score came in the 22nd minute when Bruin goalie Luke
Ridder came out high, only to have Nathan Gonzales pass him with a
soft roller into the right corner of the net.
La Verne increased its lead early in the second half when Ryan
Estrada sent a through ball to Lorenzo Leyva racing down the middle
of the field, who scored from 30 yards out on the break past keeper
Ricardo Sotelo, who had come out to challenge the drive.
Sotelo got a hand on the shot, but not enough to deflect it out of
the net in the 53rd minute. Ko Yajima scored the
Leopards' final goal 20 minutes later on a straight-in shot
from 12 yards out after a cross from the right by Abraham
Perez.
The Leopards took 21 shots in all, putting 11 on goal, but
Ridder had four saves in the first half for the Bruins, including
one on a penalty kick, and Sotelo had three in the second
half. La Verne keeper David Lopez had two saves as the Bruins
took six shots in all.
One of the stops by Lopez came in the 81st minute on a penalty
kick try by Luke Dickens. Lopez blocked the shot but was
unable to control it, and Dickens raced in to put the ball into the
net. However, the goal was disallowed by the center official,
who admitted to George Fox coach Luis Del Rio after the game that
he had blown the call.
La Verne held a 4-1 advantage in corner kicks and committed 22
fouls to only six by George Fox.
