NEWBERG, Ore. --- The George Fox men's soccer team hosted the conference-best Bearcats of Willamette University Saturday afternoon, as the Bearcats weathered the Bruins with a 2-0 score.
Recap:
It was a windy and rainy day for the Bruins and the Bearcats, as both teams had to play through a steady downpour the entire game.
Both teams traded shots early on, but the key to today's game was about possession The Bearcats were able to fire off three shots in a two minute span after 20 minutes of play, but Bruins' keeper Andrew Phillis saved the one shot on frame. The Bearcats did manage to find the back of the net 10 minutes later when a cross to the middle found Max Berner-Hays, who tallied his third for the season.
The Bruins went into the break down by one, 1-0.
The second half was similar to the first, as both teams had trouble maintaining possession. Noah LaMadrid had an opportunity in the 55th minute, but it sailed just high.
Berner-Hays was the hero again for the Bearcats, recording a brace in the 72nd minute with his second goal on the day.
Despite falling 2-0 to the Bearcats, the Bruins managed to fire off seven shots on the day.
Top Performers:
Sean Owens and Noah LaMadrid led the Bruins with two shots apiece. Andrew Phillis grabbed three saves on the day.
What It Means:
The Bruins are now 4-12 on the season and 2-8 in the Northwest Conference.
What Comes Next:
George Fox will travel just 15 miles for Sunday's game against Linfield at 12p.m. on Oct. 22.
