NEWBERG, Ore. --- The George Fox men's soccer team hosted the Whitworth Pirates on Friday, losing a grit-and-grind conference matchup, 2-1.
Recap:
The Bruins had a close call early as a rebound from a Whitworth shot was sent back at the keeper in just the third minute. Daniel Alonzo dove for the goal line save but was called for a handball, ensuing in a red card and penalty kick. The Pirates were unable to capitalize as the ball soared wide right, keeping the score tied at zero.
A Bruin counterattack in the 11th minute was executed beautifully as Trevor Martin sent a cross to a trailing Sean Owens. Faced with a one-on-one with the keeper, Owens took a gorgeous touch and sent the ball perfectly into the back of the net, setting the score at 1-0.
Up 1-0 and down a man against one of the top teams in the conference, the Bruins played stellar first half defense in the midfield and in the box to hold the Pirates scoreless, securing the lead going into the half. Andrew Phillis was a standout for the Bruins, saving a whopping six shots in the first half alone.
The second half was a defensive grind as Phillis continued his astounding play at keeper, racking up an additional four saves in the second half.
The Pirates managed to score on a penalty kick in the 88th minute to tie the game and send the teams into overtime.
Whitworth scored early in the first period of overtime to end the game, 2-1.
Top Performers:
Owens and Martin led the Bruin offense in this one, tallying a goal and an assist, respectively.
Phillis played a remarkable game in goal, saving a mind-boggling 11 shots.

The Bruins move to 4-13-1 overall and 2-9-1 in conference play.
