NEWBERG, Ore. --- The George Fox women's soccer program hosted Pacific Lutheran on Saturday, Nov. 6, to wrap up their season series against the Lutes and celebrate Senior Day. The top-ranked Lutes ultimately prevailed with a hard-earned 1-0 win over GFU in regulation.
How It Happened
The Bruins battled well throughout the first half with the Lutes and were able to trade possessions and targets on-frame throughout the first 45 in a scoreless draw. After 45 minutes of action, the two sides were still knotted at 0-0, but the Bruins were able to place shots on-frame than the Lutes, 2-1.
The Lutes were able to break up the shutout in the second half with a goal in the 51st minute. After earning a corner kick the Lutes swung it in and it was touched home left-footed for the 1-0 lead.
The Bruins never let up and were able to generate scoring chances of their own, but the Lutes held firm. The Bruins were able to get a corner kick in the closing minutes but the Lutes turned that away as well to cement the 1-0 win.
Top Performances
Sara Thudium made a save against 14 shots and held up well against a tough Lutes unit in-goal. The Bruins' forwards did a good job of applying pressure and put more shots on-goal than the Lutes as a unit, 3-2, but none found the net.
Coach's Thoughts
"Today's game was well-fought by both teams," coach Laura Schott said after the match. "Congrats to PLU on their effort. [I also want to say] a huge thank you and congrats to our team and our seniors on the season so far. What they've done to increase the level of play and expectation of the program in a very fun, healthy way is impressive. We love you!"
