Late Willamette Goals Break Up Promising Start For Bruins' Final Match

Box Score

NEWBERG, Ore. --- The George Fox men's soccer team wrapped up its 2021 spring season with a hard-fought overtime defeat on its home pitch in a 2-1 final against Willamette.

How It Happened

The two teams were evenly matched in the first half for possession and touches, but George Fox got on the board first with a beautiful set piece goal late in the first half. After winning a corner kick on the right wing, Alan Rincón swung a ball in for Solek Ashkinos and the sophomore forward buried it in the net with a header for a 1-0 lead in the 39th minute.

The 1-0 lead held until late in the second half as both teams' keepers made save after save to keep their sides in the match. In the 84th minute, the Bearcats were able to level the match at 1-1 with a deep strike from the top of the 18 that glanced in off the right post.

Neither team put in a goal in regulation and the two sides headed to extra time. The Bearcats were able to win possession early, and in the 93rd minute a one-on-one situation turned into a game-winner on the far post for the Bearcats.

Top Performers

Rincóns' cross and Ashkinos' finish both earn nods here, and Cole Benton made several impressive diving stops to keep his team in the match during the game, finishing with 10 saves on the night.

What It Means

George Fox finishes the shortened season with a 3-5 record overall and in conference.
