NEWBERG, Ore. --- The George Fox women's soccer team went toe-to-toe with NAIA College Of Idaho for 45 minutes, before the visitors took over in the second half, scoring all of their goals in a 4-0 victory at the Austin Sports Complex.
How It HappenedÂ
The Bruins actually had the lion's share of shots in the first half, putting six of their eight strikes on frame. Yotes' starting goalkeeper Shae Waters had to make a sliding stop at the feet of George Fox's Courtney Jones on a 1 vs. 1 matchup in the 16th minute to nullify a golden opportunity. In the waning seconds of the first half, Oregon transfer Maggie Phillips got off a strong shot from left of goal, but Waters turned it away for her sixth save of the half.
The second half was a different story as College Of Idaho got on the board just three minutes in on a chip shot from the left side by Larissa Wegner over the head of Bruins' goalkeeper Bella Salazar. Five minutes later, a corner kick from the left crossed in front of the Bruins' goal where Yotes' defender Brynna Herridge finished with a perfectly placed header off the underside of the crossbar. The Bruins never recovered from the early onslaught. They did get three more shots on the frame, but none seriously challenged the Yotes' second-half keeper Hannah McFadden. College Of Idaho added two more goals, outshooting the Bruins 12-6 in the final 45 minutes to garner a slight edge for the overall match.
Top Performers
Rebecca Kozak and Maggie Choate each had four shots with three on goal. Salazar went the distance in goal, finishing with seven saves. The Yotes got goals from four different players, while McFadden earned the win with three saves in the second half.Â
Coach's Thoughts
"Today will be a good growth experience, said head coach Laura Schott. "Everyone played today and there were very good moments. There were also situations we are very capable of doing better with in future games. Overall, I'm glad we got to see good competition in non-conference play and we are looking forward to our upcoming games."
What It Means
The Bruins complete their non-league slate with a 2-2 record.
