NEWBERG, Ore.. -- The George Fox women's soccer team dominated nearly every statistic on a Wednesday night matchup against Pacific (Ore.), but couldn't break past the Boxer defense in a 0-0 tie.
How It Happened
From the start of the game, it was clear that the George Fox offense would be controlling the game. The Boxers dropped their defense far back, playing conservatively against the potent Bruin attack. This meant that the Bruins kept the ball on their side of the field for 66% of the first half, but that every shot would be hard-earned. Fox outshot Pacific 13-0 in the half, but weren't able to break past the defense.Â
The second half started off the same as the first, with the Bruins dominating possession.
Maggie Phillips, looking to score her record-setting 16th goal of the season, had already come close to scoring — her shot in the 24th minute clanged off the crossbar — but her best chance of the day came in the 56th.
Phillips broke past defenders and charged towards the goal, but her shot was stopped by Boxer goalie Kylie Pascual. Pascual had 12 saves on the day for Pacific. The Bruins received another chance in the 60th minute, when
Maggie Choate's shot also bounced off the crossbar; in total, the Bruins had three shots that hit off the top woodwork.Â
The final chance of the day came while the seconds ran down in the game.
Hannah Beardemphl managed to fire off a shot, but it fell into the hands of Pascual to keep the score tied, 0-0. Though the Bruins outshot Pacific 29-3, they were held scoreless for the first time all season.
Top Performances
Phillips led the way for the Bruins with 13 shots, while Choate and Beardemph were next up with four shots. All four of Beardemphl's shots were on goal, a team-high total.
Alexis Breer,
Willa Evans,
Taylor Ho, and
Becca Kozak all tallied a shot on goal on
the day. Defensively,
Madeline Bailey wasn't tested often, but did record an impressive save off of a Boxer header in the 64th minute.
Coach's Thoughts
"This program is taking huge strides," head coach
Laura Schott said, "That is a credit to the mentality and talent of our players. It's not easy to do, and even harder to maintain when things don't go your way. These players are committed to each other and
doing their best and they make coaching fun. We played well today, but soccer is hard and scoring can be very tough sometimes. I can't wait to see what we do Sunday. The players will be ready to get at it again."
What It Means
The Bruins remain unbeaten on the season, sitting at a 7-0-4 record, with a 5-0-4 Northwest Conference mark.Â
What Happens Next
The Bruins will return to Austin on Sunday, October 16, to take on the No. 22-ranked Puget Sound Loggers. The Bruins gave the Loggers their lone NWC loss of the year with a 3-0 victory on September 18.
