NEWBERG, Ore. — Riding off of a big victory one week prior over rival Linfield, the George Fox men's soccer team continued to keep the energy up with a dominant 3-0 victory over Whitworth.
How It Happened
Looking to finish out their season strong, the Bruins brought the energy from the first second that elapsed. After only seven minutes, Eugene Peltier found the back of the net with the assistance of
Joshua Chang to give the Bruins an early lead. After moving the ball quickly downfield, Chang was able to sneak the ball past the goalie to Peltier at the edge of the net for the score and the lead. Once they had gained the lead, the Bruin's defense held tight, preventing the Pirates from evening the score for the remainder of the 1st half.
The second half began the same way as the first — with an early Bruin goal. With less than five minutes off the board, the Bruins found themselves in a scoring position after a foul in the penalty box. The penalty kick from Jeff Freidman found the back of the goal to extend the Bruins' lead. As before, the Bruin's defense continued to keep the Pirates at bay, and as the end of the half was approaching, the Bruins scored their third goal of the day, all but guaranteeing victory.
After a corner shot brought the ball in around the net, a scrum ensued, with multiple people, including the goalie, attempting to extricate the ball. However, the left foot of Chang put the ball in the back of the net to extend the Bruin's lead, bringing cheers from the bench and the Bruins closer to victory. After the defense locked down the rest of the half, the Bruins left the field after securing their fourth victory of the season.
Top Performers
Peltier, Friedman, and Chang led the way for the Bruins' offense with a goal apiece, with Chang also contributing an assist. Those three players also combined for five total shots with four shots on goal, a major factor in the Bruin's victory. Defensively, Cade Matsumoto kept the Pirates at bay with five saves to keep the Bruins on top.
Coach's Thoughts
"Today was another positive step forward as we continue to grow into the identity that we are committed to," Bruin coach
Paul Karver said, "The goals don't come without team defending moments and the ability to be accountable to all the players on the field. We are growing and as a coach, it is fun to be a part of the process with a group of guys like this."
What It Means
After picking up their second conference win in a row, the Bruins elevated their overall record to 4-9-3 and their conference record to 2-6-3, a trend they hope to continue tomorrow against Whitman.
