NEWBERG, Ore. -- The George Fox men's soccer team fell down early, but battled back on Senior Night to force a tie against Pacific (Ore.) on a stormy Friday night at Austin Sports Complex.
How It Happened
The Bruins began the night by honoring their six seniors —
Kyle Revell,
Kevin Garcia,
Jamie O'Connell, Brennan Martin, and
Connor Flolo. The five active seniors earned starts in the pouring rain, a night where the weather never subsided.
The Bruins and Boxers battled in a first half that didn't see a shot for the first 20 minutes of the game, as both defenses kept the game played in the middle of the field. While Ryan McCord was able to tally a shot in the 21st, it was the Boxers that struck first on the scoreboard; Benjamin Martin wound up with the ball following a Pacific Corner, pelting the ball into the top corner to give the Boxers a 1-0 lead in the 29th minute.
The half would end up seeing each team only total two shots as the Boxers went to the half with a 1-0 lead. The Bruin team that came out of the break was a completely energized team — Fox would only allow one shot in the entire second half while shooting seven in the frame.
Jeff Friedman came close on several attempts early on in the half, and the Bruins controlled possession. Their breakthrough came in the 67th minute when Santiago Munevar drew a foul while in the penalty box. Bruin head coach
Paul Karver called on Friedman to put one in the back of the net on the penalty kick. The senior's kick did just that, beelining straight into the bottom right to knot the game at one.
Fox nearly scored five minutes later when
Joshua Chang's ball grazed the crossbar, but that proved to be the final chance the Bruins managed. The defense continued to shut down Pacific as the final game at Austin ended with a 1-1 draw.
Top Performers
Friedman tallied three shots and his one goal on the game, while Chang notched two other shots on goal.
Kyle Revell and Kellin Aguiar were the two other Bruins to put a shot on target in the game.
Coach's Thoughts
"The fight we showed to claw back to a draw from one down showed the character that this team has developed," Bruin head coach
Paul Karver said, "Pacific did a very good job of asking difficult questions of our attacking players. We look forward to one more game in Tacoma on Sunday as we finish the season strong."
What It Means
The Bruins' record now sits at 5-10-4, with a 2-7-4 overall mark. Pacific's season concluded with their Friday night bout, their record finishing at 2-12-5.
What Happens Next
The Bruins will be off to Tacoma to face the Puget Sound Loggers on Sunday, Nov. 6, for the final game of the season. The game was initially scheduled for Oct. 16, but was rescheduled to Sunday due to poor air quality.
