LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN, Ga. --- George Fox softball split a pair of games with Covenant College (Ga.) after a series of costly errors in game two eliminated the possibility of a sweep for Fox.
Game One
The Bruins run-ruled the Scots in the first game and only needed five innings to net a 13-5 win, clinching the series in the process. Kamryn Potter and Claire Fountain doubled in the first frame to plate two for a lead Fox never surrendered. The big hits kept coming for Fox as Emma Classen, Fountain, and Kimberly Pulido all homered in the win – Pulido got her second collegiate homer out in the win – and Sharon Tomei tacked on a two-RBI double in the fifth for good measure to plate the Bruins' last runs of the ball game in an eight-run win.
Ashley Davis went four innings to earn the win and Elise Wilkinson struck out two in her one inning of relief to close the game.
Game Two
The Bruins scored three in the second inning with patience at the plate and some small ball, plating one run with a Classen single and two more with an RBI walk from Potter and a wild pitch to score Classen. Fox would load the bases again in the fourth and scored one run with an RBI groundout to second base from Allisa Yabumoto.
The Scots had their best inning of the series in the bottom of the fourth, plating seven runs on three Bruin errors to take the lead for good. Another Scot run in the fifth made it 8-4, and while Fox plated three in the sixth to whittle away at the lead, Covenant got all three back in the bottom half of the inning to win it, 11-7, and prevent the sweep.
Top Performances
Potter was 5-7 at the plate with three doubles, two RBI, and four runs scored, while Davis earned her second win of the year in the circle with another effective outing in game one. Seven different Bruins doubled and three lifted homers out of the yard.
Coach's Thoughts
"We had moments today where we got an idea of what we are capable of, but consistency is key," coach Jessica Hollen said. "This series is a decent base to build on and we have a good idea of what to work on."
