Match Recap: Women's Tennis | | Seth Preuss

Fox Takes Two From Yotes At Home

NEWBERG, Ore. --- The women's tennis team swept a doubleheader against NAIA foe College of Idaho, winning the first 6-1 with NCAA DI rules and taking the second 7-2 playing by NCAA DIII rules. The teams agreed to mix up the scoring in order to get both matches in over the course of a single afternoon.

Match One

Playing doubles as one point to speed things up, Fox won the doubles point after the duos of Kalli Wiker/Olivia Morris and Ellie Mangan/Abigail Bond won the second and third doubles matchups.

Hitch and Arianna Rader made short work of their opponents in the no. 5 & 6 singles matchups with 6-0, 6-0 sweeps and Emily McDonald won her no. 4 singles matchup with a 6-3, 6-3 final.

Mangan earned a 6-3, 6-4 win at no. 2 singles and Wiker outdueled her opponent at the third singles flight with a 6-1, 7-6 victory.

Match Two

Playing each doubles match for its own point, Fox started with a 2-1 lead after Brown/Hitch and McDonald/Brenna VanderYacht each won their matchups at no. 2 & no. 3 doubles.

Mangan lost a marathon battle at no. 1 singles, 6-2, 4-6, 4-10, against the Yotes' best player, but played well even in defeat.

The rest of the Bruins won their singles matchups to finish the match with a 7-2 victory.

Brown battled to a win and was the last player standing in a lengthy fight at no. 2 with a 2-6, 6-4, 12-10 final.

Morris and Bond each won 6-1, 6-1 at no. 3 and no. 5, VanderYacht won 6-0, 6-1, and Stephanie Ramirez Barretto won 6-2, 6-1 in her first official action on the court as a Bruin.

Coach's Thoughts

"I'm proud of how everyone played today," coach Rick Cruz said. "We were able to get everyone at least one match and they all stepped up. I'm excited to see the potential of this group start to take shape."

What It Means

Fox has now won four straight after a loss to NCAA DI opponent UC Irvine in its season opener and is now 4-1 on the year.

Up Next

Fox opens NWC play on the road at the Whits, beginning with Whitworth on Saturday and ending with Whitman on Sunday, Mar. 5 & 6.
