WHITTIER, Calif. --- The No. 11-ranked George Fox men's tennis team took down Whittier on Sunday, Mar. 20, with an 8-1 final on the Poets' home courts.
How It Happened
The Bruins started the match on strong footing by sweeping doubles. Will Leach and Luke Lemaitre won, 8-4, at the number one matchup, and Ryan Olson paired with Rox Rogers to sweep court two with an 8-0 win. Vahag Pashayan and Camden Camacho won their no. 3 matchup, 8-4, to finish the sweep of doubles.
In singles, the Poets' no. 1 was able to notch a win over Leach, but Fox won the other five battles to come away with the 8-1 final. Lemaitre sat out of singles and each Bruin behind him played up a spot, putting Rogers on court two with a 6-2, 6-4 win. Luis Rojas moved up to court three and won a marathon match, 1-6, 6-3, 1-0 (11-9), and Pashayan was able to win 6-2, 6-4 in his no. 4 matchup. Camacho earned a 6-1, 6-3 win playing up at no. 5, and Olson earned a 6-1, 6-2 victory on court six to finish the match.
Coach's Thoughts
"It was a good start to our trip in California," coach Jeff Cero said afterward. "The energy and support was there, but the tennis can improve. We are looking forward to a solid opponent in Redlands on Tuesday, and it should be a great match."
What It Means
The Bruins are now 8-1 on the year with their lone loss coming to an NCAA DI school and are riding a six-match winning streak.
