BLOOMINGTON, Ill. --- The George Fox women's lacrosse team emphatically avenged last year's season-ending loss to Illinois Wesleyan after thumping the Titans, 19-3, on the Titans' home field.
How It Happened
The ball rarely lived on the Titan's offensive end as Fox won draw after draw and obliterated the Titan's clearing attempts all afternoon. The Bruins won 20 of the 26 draws during the game and broke up 12 of the Titan's 18 clear attempts to keep possession for the overwhelming majority of the game.
Fox got out to an early 4-1 lead after the opening 15 minutes by putting all seven of its shots on-goal in the quarter. Bailey Faust scored the first and last goals of the quarter, bookending scores from Kyra Barnes and Marena Tharpe, and netted what proved to be the game-winner off a feed from Tharpe with just over two minutes left in the quarter.
The Bruins put the hammer all the way down in the second quarter, scoring seven unanswered goals while not allowing a single shot from IWU in the period. Tharpe, Lyla Roy, and Carleigh DeLapp did all the scoring for Fox in the second quarter to turn on the 10-goal running clock by halftime.
The Titans got two shots into the Bruins' net in the third, but Fox scored four itself and then held the Titans without a shot again in the fourth quarter as they cruised to the 19-3 win. Olivia Geyling, Andrea Garcia-Milla, and Julia Quist joined their teammates on the box score with second-half goals and Fox kept the pressure on through the final horn, including a last-second stand in front of their net to save a would-be fourth score by the Titans.
Top Performances
Faust and Tharpe scored four goals each to lead the scoring, and DeLapp joined them with three goals as the third Fox player with a hat trick in the game. Tharpe had a standout day all over the field as the sophomore middie tallied seven points (4g, 3a) on just four shots, scooped up two ground balls, and won five draws. Rand made five saves, including multiple free position stuffs, and finished the day with an .833 save rate.
