CLAREMONT, Calif. --- Facing a top-10 caliber team on neutral courts, Fox suffered its first loss in the 2022 men's tennis season after Bowdoin overcame the Bruins in singles play.
How It Happened
The Bruins' doubles tandems were able to take two of the three matchups for a solid start to the contest but after doubles, things turned away from Fox as the Polar Bears built momentum on the singles courts.
The pairings of Will Leach and Luke Lemaitre, as well as Vahag Pashayan and Camden Camacho, each won 8-6 on courts one and three in doubles. After doubles play, Camacho was the only Bruin to come away a winner in singles play with a 6-3, 6-4 win on court six.
Ryan Olson played up at court five and fought well in a 7-5, 6-3 loss, and Leach took his opponent on court one to a third-set tiebreak in a 7-5, 4-6, 6-3 loss. None of the Bruins were swept and all six were competitive, but they weren't able to win the key moments in a hard-fought loss.
Coach's Thoughts
"We battled tough but couldn't get the holds during singles when we needed it," coach Jeff Cero said. "That extended pretty much across our singles matches. It's one thing to show grit and battle, but at some point you've dug yourself into a hole you can't get out of and we dug too many holes today. We are excited to get back on the court tomorrow against Johns Hopkins."
What It Means
Fox takes just its second loss of the year and its first against an NCAA DIII opponent with the defeat by Bowdoin.
Up Next
The Bruins are back on the courts again tomorrow as they face the No. 6 Bluejays of Johns Hopkins.
