TACOMA, Wash. --- George Fox Softball grabbed another conference series win on Sunday, Mar. 27, after playing out a doubleheader against Puget Sound that had been rained out a month earlier. The Bruins used the long ball to great effect in a sweep with a 4-3 win in game one and a 5-3 win in game two.
Game One
The first matchup of the day was a fast-paced pitchers' duel for the majority of the contest. After four and a half innings of scoreless softball where both teams' starting arms and defense kept the game moving, things slowed down in the bottom of the fifth as UPS pushed in two runs with a double.
Fox continued to struggle to find its rhythm until it mattered most in the seventh. Fox loaded the bases with a hit batter, an error, and a single to bring up Sharon Tomei for one of the rarest things in the sport - an unearned grand slam. The freshman DP came up with the bases loaded and two away to give Fox a lead it wouldn't relinquish in the most crucial moment.
Ashley Davis finished her 14th complete game of the year with seven strikeouts and her 12th win of 2022 after only surrendering two earned runs on the day.
Game Two
Elise Wilkinson got the start and worked five and a third in her second collegiate win, striking out four in the process. Emma Eastman came on in the sixth and closed the game for Fox with 1.2 innings of work out of the pen.
Tomei stayed locked in from her game one performance with two bombs and Emma Classen also gave Fox a homer out of her nine-spot in the lineup to help the Bruins close out the series in decisive fashion. Fox built a 5-0 lead by the bottom of the fifth and Tomei scored three of the Bruins' five runs with a solo shot, a two-run homer, and a score via Logger fielding error, and the Bruins were able to hold off a late rally attempt to cap the day with a 5-3 final.
Top Performances
Tomei could not be stopped, hitting 4-7 with six runs, seven RBI, and three bombs. Davis continues to climb the Bruins' all-time lists for complete games, strikeouts, and wins with her 12th win of the year, and Classen gave Fox a solo shot and a stolen base in game two.
What It Means
Fox is 19-9 on the year and has won five straight with three conference series left on the ledger and three NWC series wins to date.
