CLAREMONT, Calif. --- George Fox sent its women's lacrosse team to the NCAA postseason for the third time in its history and faced a tough Claremont-Mudd-Scripps team, falling 22-6 to the Athenas in the 2022 NCAA Opening Round.
How It Happened
Playing in scorching heat, the Bruins were able to keep pace with the Athenas early and even built an initial lead with scores from Carleigh DeLapp and Lyla Roy. The Bruins led, 2-1, midway through the first quarter, but the Athenas' depth began to factor in with the heat and Fox fell behind by the end of the first quarter, 9-2.
The Athenas continued their charge through the end of the first half and took a 14-2 lead at the halftime intermission before picking up the scoring again in the third quarter. Marena Tharpe was able to find unguarded net once in the quarter and DeLapp went on a personal 3-0 run in the fourth quarter to help close the gap, but the Athenas kept the pedal down all the way through the final horn in a 22-6 final.
Top Performances
DeLapp led the Bruins with four goals - including a 2-2 performance on free positions - Ella Rand made four saves in her final game as a Bruin, and Bailey Faust capped her career with game-high five draw controls.
