Bruins Strong Start Not Enough Against Beacons

EUGENE, Ore. --- Despite a goal in the opening moments of the game, the George Fox men's soccer team was unable to hold onto an early lead, falling to Bushnell 1-2 on Thursday.

How It Happened
The Bruins began their regular season starting eight freshmen, and the young group made sure to leave their mark early. Freshman Kellin Aguiar needed only 1:38 of game time in his collegiate career to score a goal. After receiving a pass from Robert Rodarte, Aguiar put the Bruins up 1-0 early with a shot that sailed over the outstretched hands of Diego Motes-Carrera and sank into the top right corner of the net.

From there, though, the Bruin offense fell silent. The Fox men would only record three more shots throughout the rest of the game — all in the first half. Though the young front generated pressure, they did not find the goal again. The Beacons slowly chipped away at the deficit, scoring a goal 17 minutes into the game to knot the score.

At the half, both teams had played to nearly identical stats, but the second half saw the Beacons jump out to an offensive advantage, outshooting the Bruins 8-0. The Bruin defense bent for nearly 20 minutes before Caleb Burke scored a goal, falling down between three defenders and poking a ball past to give the Beacons the lead. Though the Bruin offense tried valiantly to get back in the game, they could not muster a shot in the final minutes.

Top Performers
Aguiar's first goal was also thanks to Rodarte's first assist of his career. Andrew Turner recorded two shots and Kyle Revell notched one to round out the other offensive performances for the Bruins.

Coach's Thoughts
"The guys played hard this evening but we haven't fully synced up as a cohesive group," Bruin head coach Paul Karver said, "The more we play together the better we will be, this is a quality group. It takes time to do the things we are trying to do."

What It Means
The Bruins drop their opener and fall to 0-1 on the season, while the Beacons improve to 2-2.

What Happens Next
The Bruins will host the Multnomah Lions for their regular season home opener at Austin Sports Complex on Saturday, September 3. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
