Hard Fought Match Ends in Draw For Bruins

NEWBERG, Ore. - After jumping out to an early lead, George Fox Bruins played to their first tie of the season, remaining unbeaten on the year with a 1-1 draw against Whitworth on Saturday.

How It Happened
The Bruins controlled possession in the opening stages of the first half, and it led to a 1-0 lead off an unassisted goal from the right foot of Maggie Phillips in the 23rd minute. Whitworth responded in the 43rd minute, after a ball slipped through Madeline Bailey's hands and led to a close-range goal, tying it up at one apiece. It was the first time the Bruin defense had given up a goal during the young season.

The second half was filled with back and forth action, with the Bruins recording ten shots in the second, with six shots on goal. Fox had a chance to take the lead in the 86th minute, when Maggie Phillips had a shot off a corner, but the Whitworth goalkeeper was there for the save.

With no goal conceded by either side during the half, resulting in the end score of 1-1. The Bruins defense was stout in the second half, with Madeline Bailey recording three saves. In the fast paced and hard fought game, the Bruins out shot the Pirates 23-12, and had 11 shots on goal. The Bruins continue to show that they are serious contenders for the league title this year, continuing their unbeaten stretch to begin the season.

Top Performers
Maggie Phillips led the way with a goal and 13 shots, 7 of which were on goal; Phillips goal was her 12th of the year, already good enough for fifth in the Bruin single-season record books. Madeline Bailey continues to be a force in the box, collecting 5 saves on the day, keeping the Bruins alive for much of the game.

Coach's Thoughts
Whitworth presented us with some good challenges today," Bruin head coach Laura Schott said, "They created some good chances and so did we. At the end of the day a tie was a fair result."

What It Means
The Bruins now sit at 4-0-1, and 2-0-1 in conference play, while Whitworth moves to 1-3-2, and 1-1-1 in conference play.

What Comes Next
The Bruins continue their home stand against the Whitman Blues tomorrow, Sept. 25, at noon at Austin Sports Complex.
