Phillips Takes Over As Single-Game Leader As Bruins Blow By Multnomah

NEWBERG, Ore. -- Two days removed from what had already been a historic performance, Maggie Phillips put her name into the Bruins' all-time performance lists with a six-goal outing to take the single-game record over from alumna Monique Weaver.

How It Happened

After some early skirmishing in the midfield to start the match, Fox quickly set the pace and took control with an early strike by their talented forward, Phillips, as she slotted an unassisted shot top center for the game-winner.

Phillips followed that with another unassisted goal in the same part of the net a few minutes later in the 11th minute, and Kayleigh Gugliotta netted the first goal of her college career in the 17th minute off of a feed by Maggie Choate.

Becca Kozak joined the scoring party with an unassisted goal in the 25th minute and at the half Fox led 4-0.

The second half of the match was all Maggie magic as the senior striker put four shots into the Lions' net, all without assists after repeatedly beating her defenders single-handed. Phillips was able to slot shots home on the left and right posts, high and low, with either foot in her record-setting performance to cap an 8-0 victory.

Top Performance

Who else but Maggie Phillips - the senior found the net early and often all afternoon with both feet and from all over the 18. With her six goals in the match, Phillips passes Monique Weaver, who scored five goals against Cascade in September of 2003, and already has 11 goals on the year in countable contests. The Bruins' single-season record is 15 goals, and the senior is already tied for seventh all-time in a single season after just two matches.

Coach's Thoughts

"I'm proud of the team and the fact that we got to look at some different lineups and formations over the last two games," coach Laura Schott said afterward. "The execution was good and we still have room to improve which is awesome.

"Congrats to Maggie on the goals in a game record. I took her out in the last game on five and as a fellow striker I wasn't about to do that twice. Our team was focused on executing the game plan and also on supporting Maggie in achieving this goal, so when it became a realistic opportunity everyone was all in. I'm proud of all of them and I know Maggie would be the first to say she couldn't have done it without her teammates."

What It Means

Fox is now 2-0 officially to start the season and has 10 days to rest and reset before their next test.

What Happens Next

The Bruins will have a breather before opening conference play at Pacific (Ore.) in Forest Grove, Ore. on Sept. 14 at 7:00 pm.
