NEWBERG, Ore -- After picking up their first win the day before, the George Fox women's tennis team faced off against Seattle, picking up their first point over the Division I school in recorded program history.
How It Happened
Elizabeth Cook was the star of the show for Fox, picking up the Bruins' first win over Seattle's Shuanghui Huang in dramatic fashion. After losing the first set, 3-6, Cook rallied to win the second, 6-1, and the final, 5-10. Before Cook's victory, the Bruins had been a combined 0-21 against the Redhawks.
Elsewhere, the Bruin women fought hard against the Division I opponent. In singles,
Olivia Morris picked up four games in the second set against Lola Tavcar, while
Emily McDonald picked up three.
For doubles,
Ellie Mangan and Morris lost their #1 match, 0-6, while
Kalli Wiker and
Cassey Hitch stayed competitive in their 3-6 loss. Arianna Radar and
Brenna VanderYacht dropped their set, 1-6, but fought hard.
Coach's Thoughts
"As a whole, the girls competed really well today," Bruins head coach
Rick Cruz said, "Elizabeth stayed steady and came up with a big win at #6. This is a match that we can build off of and gain confidence from as we move forward."
What It Means
The Bruins fall to 1-1 on the year but remain 1-0 in Division III play. Seattle improved to 2-4.
What Comes Next
Fox will get eight days off before playing their third straight match in Newberg. Their Sunday match against Lewis & Clark is scheduled to begin at 11:00 am.
