WHITTIER, Calif. -- After splitting their first two series against La Verne and Pomona Pitzer, the George Fox softball team dropped their final two games against Whittier, losing in two heartbreakers, 8-9 and 2-3.
Game One
The scoring started right away with the Bruins loading the bases in the first inning — only managing to score one run and leaving three on base at the end of the inning. Whitter responded with two runs to put the Bruins down 2-1.Â
Fox wouldn't stay down for long, as
Kamryn Potter and
Aliya Harmon each mashed solo home runs to put themselves up 3-2. In the fifth,
Emma Classen hit an RBI double to right field to extend the lead to 4-2, followed quickly by
Ashley Sansoni picking up an RBI on a fielder's choice. Potter hit her second long ball of the day — this one a two-run shot to right — to push the lead to 7-2.Â
The Poets responded in the bottom half of the fifth, loading the bases and scoring five runs on six hits in the inning. The disastrous inning for the Bruins tied the game in the fifth at 7-7.
The Bruins loaded the bases in the sixth and got one run in off of a walk, but once again the Bruins left runners on base with the bases loaded. The Bruins left 13 runners on base in the game, which hurt them in the end. The Poets responded with a run in the sixth to tie it, and neither team could score in the seventh inning, forcing the game to extra innings.Â
The Bruins left runners on base in both the eighth and the ninth, leaving the door open for Whitter to win the game on a walk-off in the ninth, the final score being 9-8.
Game Two
The Bruins found themselves in a pitchers duel in the second game, with ace Ashely Davis going the full game, giving up only two runs going into the final inning. The Bruins scored runs in the fourth off a
Sydney Sandifer home run, and again in the seventh off an error to tie the game.Â
In the bottom of the seventh, the Poets managed to get a runner to third, then scored on an error to win the game on their second walk-off of the day.
