ELIZABETHTOWN, Ky. -- The George Fox softball team continued their successful Kentucky swing with a monster 33-1 victory in game one of their doubleheader on Sunday, which they followed up with a 6-1 in game 2 to sweep the day.
Game One
The Bruins set several team records in recorded program history in their 33-1 win over Anderson (Ind.): Runs scored (33), hits (29), and RBIs (29). The Bruins also tied a record with seven home runs in the game. The 33 runs scored in the game are more than 104 Division III softball teams have scored this season.
The game began with a 10-run inning, with
Sydney Sandifer putting the first runs on the board for the Bruins with a three-run homer to left to jump out to a quick lead. Another homer by
Claire Fountain later in the inning tacked on another three, and with some runs sprinkled in between, gave the Bruins a massive 10-0 lead after the first inning of play.
The second was more of the same, with Fountain once again parking a ball for three more runs. From there, singles and doubles were the methods of choice for the Bruin offense, who scored six more in that inning from base hits and moving runners from station to station. After a scoreless third, Fox tacked on 14 more in the final two innings to secure a 33-1 mercy-rule victory. Anderson's sole run was scored in the bottom half of the fifth inning.
Game Two
The Bruins took on Hanover for the second game of the day, and once again emerged victorious after a final score of 6-1. As with the first game, the Bruins took advantage early, scoring three quick runs/
Kamryn Potter got the scoring started with a solo homer, which was followed by a two-run
Reagan Medina bomb later in the inning.
Hanover responded with a run in the top of the second on an RBI single, but the Bruins responded with a
Sydney Sandifer solo shot in the bottom of the third to retake a three-run lead.
The Bruins tacked on two more with one run in both the bottom of the fifth and sixth.
Kamryn Potter launched her second home run of the game to give the Bruins their run in the fifth, and an RBI double from
Kimberly Pulido scored
Claire Fountain to give Fox one more run in the sixth to secure a 6-1 victory.
The pitching for the Bruins in both games was lights out, only allowing two runs on 12 hits, and combining for 13 strikeouts to keep their opponents from challenging the red-hot offense.
Top Performances
Several Bruins had multi-home run games on the day, with many more contributing in other ways offensively.
Claire Fountain blasted two homers and a sac fly in game one to contribute eight RBIs to the Bruins effort, while
Kamryn Potter, Sydney Sandifter, and
Ashley Sansoni also had a bomb apiece. In game two, it was Potter's turn to park a couple, as she checked in for two RBIs on two solo bombs to total three for the day, while
Reagan Medina also chipped in a homer to aid the Bruin offense. In total, Fox smacked 10 home runs over their two Sunday games.
