PORTLAND, Ore -- The second time was just as nice for the George Fox women's tennis team, as they traveled to Portland to take down Lewis and Clark for the second time of the year, winning 6-3 in their first NWC matchup.
How It Happened
The Bruins were able to sweep all three of their doubles matchups, with the #1 doubles team of
Cassey Hitch and
Kalli Wiker winning quickly, 8-1. Oliva Morris and
Ellie Mangan were also able to pull out a win, 8-5. To wrap up doubles play Ari Rader and
Brenna VanderYacht won their matchup 8-4.
On the singles side, Fox split the six wins with the Pioneers to go 3-3. On court one,
Kalli Wiker beat out her opponent, 6-1, 7-5.
Cassey Hitch pulled out a tough win against Hayley Kreps in a long match that lasted just over two and a half hours. Hitch dropped her first set 4-6 but was able to come back to win the next two 6-1, 7-6 (7-4).
The Bruins rounded out the afternoon with one more win in singles by Ari Rader. Rader won her match 6-4, 6-1. The three singles wins were able to get the Bruins the win over the Pioneers.
Coach's Thoughts
"This was a good conference win for us," Bruin head coach
Rick Cruz said, "The doubles sweep gave us a big advantage going into the singles, but we had to fight hard to get those final two points. Kalli had another strong performance and Cassey came up big to clinch the match."
What It Means
The Bruins are now 4-2 overall and 1-0 in Northwest Conference play, while the Pioneers fall to 3-5 overall and 0-1 in NWC.
What Comes Next
The Bruins come back home to the Multi-Use Facility to play the Linfield Wildcats in their second NWC matchup on Sunday. That match will start at 10:00 am.
