SPOKANE, Wash. – In their last series of the regular season, the George Fox softball team dropped the first game of their Saturday doubleheader before winning game two against the Whitworth Pirates.
Game One
Back-to-back singles and a walk in the first inning loaded the bases for the Bruins in the top half of the first inning; however, they could only manage to get one run across in the inning, stranding two base runners. The Pirates responded with a run of their own in the same inning, making the score 1-1.
The Bruins exploded for four runs in the third inning, scoring two runs off a
Sydney Sandifer home run, a bases-loaded walk, and a fielder's choice. The offense output put Fox up by four runs, 5-1. Whitworth got two runs across in the bottom half of the third, bringing them within two runs at the end of the third inning. Both teams' pitching went to work for the next three innings, with no runs being scored.
In the top half of the seventh, the Bruins failed to get a batter on base, going down in order and not adding any insurance runs to their two-run lead. It would prove to be costly, as the Pirates would score three runs in the bottom of the seventh, winning on a walk-off infield single. The dramatic finish resulted in a 5-6 loss for the Bruins.
Game Two
GFU had their sixth game this year where they scored 10 runs or more in a win in game two; Fox would win the second game 10-5 while hitting multiple home runs.
Fox scored their first run of the game in the second inning – scoring off a fielder's choice with runners on first and third. In the third inning, the Bruins tacked on three runs to their lead, the highlight being Sandifer's second home run of the day. GFU scored three more runs in the fourth inning, scoring off a
Kimberly Pulido RBI single, and a two-run RBI double from
Kamryn Potter.
With Fox up, 7-2, in the sixth, the Bruins added on three more runs to give their lead even more of a buffer. Pulido hit a two-run bomb to start off the scoring, and
Emma Classen hit an RBI single to push the lead out to 10-2. The Pirates scored three runs across the sixth and seventh innings, but Fox shut them down eventually, giving GFU the 10-5 win.
