FOREST GROVE, Ore. -- The George Fox women's tennis team jumped ahead in doubles play against Pacific and continued on with four additional wins in singles play, beating the Boxers, 6-3.
How It Happened
Starting in doubles, the number one team of
Cassey Hitch and
Olivia Morris faced tough competition, losing, 8-0. The team of
Ellie Mangan and
Brenna VanderYacht won by a score of 8-3. On court three,
Arianna Rader and
Emily McDonald made quick work of their opponents, winning, 8-0, as Fox would take the 2-1 lead into singles play.
The Bruins top two singles players would find themselves facing off against the Boxers top two players and could not grab the win.
Kalli Wiker lost 6-1,6-2, and
Cassey Hitch lost, 6-1, 6-0. On court three,
Elizabeth Cook changed the scoreline to favor the Bruins, winning her match without giving up a game, 6-0, 6-0. Stephaine Ramirez Barreto also succeeded in her matchup, winning, 6-2, 6-0.
Sophie Denham and
Abigail Bond were also able to win their matches, and Fox would take the overall win after going 4-2 in singles, winning the match, 6-3.
Coach's Thoughts
"It was a team effort. Everyone got an opportunity to play, and we won in the spots we needed to. We knew Pacific would be tough in the top spots, but our depth came through for us," Bruin head coach
Rick Cruz said, "Tomorrow, we have a chance to clinch 3rd place in conference with a win over Willamette which is exciting! We also get to recognize our seniors and the hard work and dedication they have put into the program."

The Bruins are now 8-8 overall and 4-2 in Northwest Conference play, while the Boxers fall to 2-9 overall and 2-4 in NWC.

The Bruins will head into their final day of the regular season Sunday, where they will host Willamette for a chance to clinch third place on senior day. That match will start at 11:00 am, with senior recognition happening before the match.
