NEWBERG, Ore. -- The George Fox men's tennis team made quick work of the fourth-seeded Lewis & Clark Pioneers on Saturday, defeating the Pios, 5-0, to advance to their third consecutive Northwest Conference Championship Match.
How It Happened
The Bruins swept all three doubles, with the team of
Lars Schmassmann and
Hunter Fujimori winning, 8-3, and the team of
Austin Stone and
Eli Mizerski winning, 8-2. The highlight match of the day was a fight on court one between the Fox team
Camden Camacho and
Vahag Pashayan and the Pios duo of Wade McDermott and Kristian Peev. Camacho and Pashayan held off the charging Pio team to win in a tiebreaker, 8-7 (8-6).
For singles, the Bruins needed just two wins before ending the match, 5-0. Those wins came courtesy of Stone and Camacho, who fought past their opponents — Stone winning 6-1, 6-0, and Camacho victorious, 6-0, 6-0. Of the four matches remaining at the time of completion, Pashayan once again had the closest match of the day, trailing 4-5 but fighting hard on court one. Fujimori, Schmassmann, and Mizerski all appeared to be on their way to victory before the game was called.
Coach's Thoughts
"I thought we did a good job of focusing our energy after doubles," Bruin head coach
Jeff Cero said, "Now, we're excited for the opportunity to play in the NWC Championship and try to reach one of our season's goals."
What it Means
The Bruins have only given up five points to conference opponents this season and will advance to their third consecutive NWC title against either Pacific or Whitman.

The Conference Championship will take place on Sunday, April 23, with a scheduled start time of noon. Streaming will be available on the Bruins' website.
