ORANGE, Calif. – Returning starter
Becca Kozak scored the first goal of the season for George Fox Women's Soccer, and
Willa Evans tied the game in the 81st minute to end the contest against the Chapman Panthers.
How It Happened
Fox wasted no time finding the back of the net, as sophomore
Kayleigh Gugliotta found the open Kozak in the 9th minute of the first half to give the Bruins a 1-0 lead. They held onto the lead for the rest of the half despite being outshot by the Panthers in the frame, 6-3. Freshman Goalkeeper
Emily Robey had three first-half saves to help keep the Panthers at bay.
Chapman's aggression eventually broke down GFU's defense, as they broke through and scored a tying goal in the 65th minute, making the score 1-1. The Bruins would forfeit another goal just minutes later, putting Fox behind 2-1.
Fox responded quickly, as Evans' goal came in the 80th minute, on a wonderous freekick from 40 yards out after a Chapman foul. The opportunistic goal brought the Bruins to a 2-2 tie. The tying boot would net the Bruins their first draw of the season.
Top Performances
Becca Kozak showed that she was ready to step it up even more in year three, scoring her first goal in just the second game.
Willa Evans' goal late in the game was another highlight; the goal was her first score of the season as well. Freshman
Emily Robey had six saves on the day.
Coaches Thoughts
"Comeback tie on the road in a hard-fought game was a positive." Bruin head coach
Laura Schott said, "We had a lot of strong performances and learned some things about ourselves as well. When we went down, we fought back and played well. Looking forward to Wednesday."
What It Means
Fox is still looking for their first win of the season, but they did avoid dropping two games back-to-back, as the tie takes them to 0-1-1. Chapman is now 1-0-1.
