NEWBERG, Ore. --- Riding on a career day from
Olivia Geyling, the George Fox women's lacrosse team won their second conference game of the weekend, taking down the Whitworth Pirates, 19-7.
How It Happened
The Bruins won the opening draw before a yellow card for an illegal shot gave the Pirates possession. Whitworth's Campbell Vincent put away a goal to give the Pirates a 1-0 advantage. That lead would be short-lived, as
Gabriella Muzquiz caused a Pirates turnover leading to
Olivia Geyling's first goal of the game. Minutes later,
Carleigh DeLapp put away a free position shot while also drawing a yellow card on Whitworth, giving the Bruins their first lead of the game.
Sasha Thayer would drive the ball down and give it up to
Marena Tharpe to give Fox the two-goal lead. Fox found the back of the net two more times, one apiece from DeLapp and Geyling. Heading into the second quarter, the Bruins had a four-goal lead.
Three minutes into the second, Marena found
Ava Bluhm for the goal, before the Bruins hit a minor drought. It took Fox five minutes to find the net again after a Pirate goal — and again, it was Geyling. Minutes later,
Lana Davis scored her first goal of the game. After a minute of back and forth possession, the Pirates retained the ball, leading to their third goal of the game. Seconds later,
Claire Abraham scored her first career goal, then grabbed the ensuing ground ball off the draw, leading to a Tharpe goal, assisted by Bluhm. The Bruins held a 10-3 lead heading into the half.
In the third quarter both teams would find success finding the back of the net. The Bruins put away two goals before the Pirates got on the board. Though Whitworth scored two additional goals, pulling back to 12-6, Tharpe continued to dish it out, assisting on Aabraham's second goal of the game. Both teams scored again to close out the quarter, 14-7.
Fox scored five unanswered goals in the fourth quarter, including two from Geyling and Bluhm and one from DeLapp. The flurry of goals gave the Bruins the 19-7 win over the Pirates.
