NEWBERG, Ore. – The George Fox softball team won both games of their make-up doubleheader for the postponed games from April 6, taking game one against Pacific 10-2, and game two 5-2.
How It Happened – Game One
The George Fox offense immediately put the Boxers in a corner, as
Makayla Noone and
Kamryn Potter each got on base in their first at-bats. With one out, Noone perfectly timed a steal on a low pitch, taking third base before the Boxers could attempt to throw her out, allowing Potter to advance to second base. With both runners now in scoring position,
Sharon Tomei ripped a sharp double down the left-field line, scoring both. At the end of the first inning, the Bruins were up, 2-0.
In the top of the third, pitcher
Emma Eastman was able to get a pop-up and a key strikeout with runners on first and second to keep Pacific off the scoreboard. In the bottom half of that same inning, the Bruins' bats broke the game open, scoring four more runs on two RBI singles and an RBI double. After three frames, Fox had taken a 6-0 advantage.
Eastman kept the shutout going in the top of the fourth, sitting down the Boxers in order. In the home half of the fourth, Noone got on board with a single, and Potter hit a homered to center field to score them both and increase the Bruins' lead to 8-0.
Nicole Campa hit an RBI double after that, making the score after four innings 9-0.
The Boxers were able to get on the board in the fifth inning, scoring a pair of runs and bringing the game within the eight-run mercy run rule, 9-2. The Bruins responded with a run of their own in the bottom of the fifth with two outs, scoring on an error to give the Bruins a win, 10-2.
How It Happened – Game Two
In the second game of the day, the Boxers got out front in the first inning, scoring two runs in the first inning off an RBI single and double. After the two runs in the first, however, George Fox starter
Elise Wilkinson was lights out; the junior threw all seven innings, giving up just those initial two runs while striking out three batters.
The Bruins took advantage of the stellar performance of Wilkinson, scoring five runs in the bottom of the fifth inning – scoring all five on two home runs, one from
Kiley Harris and the other from
Sydney Sandifer.
The two long shots would be enough for Fox to come out on top, cruising to a 5-2 win in game two.
